Princess Carolyn is a tough, no-nonsense agent who is always looking out for her client’s best interests. She’s also a bit of a control freak, and she’s not afraid to speak her mind. Martindale’s performance is the perfect blend of comedy and drama, and it’s one of the reasons why Bojack Horseman is one of the best animated series on television.

In a recent interview with Vulture, Martindale talked about her role on Bojack Horseman, her career, and the secret to the show’s success.

On Princess Carolyn:

I think she’s just a woman who’s completely devoted to her job, and she’s very good at it. I don’t think she has any life outside of work. She doesn’t really have any friends, she doesn’t really have any family. She’s just completely devoted to Bojack and getting him work and getting him jobs and making sure he’s happy.

On the secret to Bojack Horseman’s success:

I think it’s because it’s so honest. It’s so incredibly honest about Hollywood and about show business and about actors and about the business itself. I think a lot of people in Hollywood are afraid to be that honest, because it’s a very tough business. And I think Will [Arnett] and Aaron [Paul] and Amy [Sedaris] and all of the writers are just so incredibly honest about it, and I think that’s why people respond to it.

On the difference between animated acting and live-action acting:

I don’t think there’s that much difference, to be honest. I think the only difference is, in animation, you don’t have to worry about your hair and makeup. [laughs] That’s the only difference. But other than that, I think it’s just acting. You’re just using your voice, and you’re just using your imagination.
